Therapeutic Kickboxing & Martial Arts Rehabilitation
Fight Back Against Neurological Challenges with Purpose and Power.

At CHC Physical Therapy, we believe that movement is medicine—but sometimes, that medicine needs a little more “kick.” Our specialized Therapeutic Kickboxing Program is led by Tetsuya “T” Yanagisawa, a Physical Therapist Assistant and a 4th-degree Karate Black Belt.

By combining the discipline of traditional martial arts with modern physical therapy principles, we offer a high-intensity, non-contact intervention designed to improve the lives of those living with Parkinson’s Disease, Post-Stroke symptoms, Dementia, and other neurological conditions.

Meet Your Instructor: Tetsuya Yanagisawa, PTA

Tetsuya brings a rare blend of clinical expertise and master-level martial arts training to the clinic. As a 4th-degree black belt, he understands the profound connection between the mind and body. His sessions aren’t just about throwing punches; they are about precision, balance, and cognitive intentionality, tailored specifically to your clinical needs and mobility level.

How Kickboxing Transforms Neurological Health

Scientific research has shown that high-intensity, “forced-use” exercise can significantly impact brain health. Our program focuses on:

  • Neuroplasticity for Parkinson’s: The rhythmic nature of kickboxing helps “rewire” the brain, improving gait, address trunk rigidity and postural instability, and combating the “freezing” episodes common in Parkinson’s patients.
  • Stroke Recovery & Symmetry: We utilize cross-body movements (punches and kicks) to encourage bilateral coordination and neuro-plasticity, helping stroke survivors regain strength and awareness on their affected side.
  • Cognitive Engagement for Dementia: Memorizing combinations and reacting to cues provides a “brain workout” with increased cerebral perfusion (blood flow) that facilitates executive function, memory, and focus.
  • Balance & Fall Prevention: Martial arts is rooted in a strong base. We work on core stability and weight-shifting to decrease fall risks and increase confidence in daily activities.

A Safe, Medically Supervised Environment

This is non-contact kickboxing. There is no sparring or risk of injury from an opponent. Instead, you will work with:

  • Heavy bags and focus mitts for sensory feedback.
  • Agility drills to improve footwork and reaction time.
  • Vocalizing during strikes to improve respiratory strength and speech volume (especially helpful for Parkinson’s).

Who Can Benefit?

While our program is specifically designed for neurological rehabilitation, it is an excellent resource for anyone facing:

  • Parkinson’s Disease (all stages)
  • Post-Stroke Recovery
  • Early-Stage Dementia & Alzheimer’s
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • General Balance and Vestibular Issues

"I had a wonderful experience at CHC Therapy. I had a stroke and open Heart surgery over a two year period and CHC treated me for both and got me up and walking, golfing, driving and I feel much better and safer. Thanks to Kyle, T, and all of the group for the help. I would recommend CHC for all your therapy needs."
